We will write with our own hands in our voices | Sarah Tripp

This informal workshop led by artist and writer Sarah Tripp will consider the many voices we use in our private and working lives. Some of these voices will be identified and distilled with a view to describing an intimate experience you will have within the workshop duration. You will be asked to make people up, these these characters will be fictional, undramatic and almost entirely kind. Please bring to the workshop two clean towels, soap, a pen and paper.

Sarah Tripp is an artist, writer and lecturer. She works with postgraduate students and mentors artists and writers. She guest lectures at international universities, most recently: Piet Zwart Institute (Rotterdam); Sandberg Institute, Geriit Rietveld Academie (Amersterda); Werkplaats Typografie, ArtEZ Institute of the Arts (Arnhem); Goldsmiths, University of the Arts (London); The Ruskin School of Art (Oxford University). In 2016, she gained a PhD from Edinburgh University in writing character studies and currently lectures on the MFA Programme at The Glasgow School of Art.

In her writing she is preoccupied with un-structuring structured activity, the close analysis of bodily experience and making people up. She works with anecdotes, interviews, transcription and miscommunication, rooting her practice in observation. Her works are marked by the use of multiple perspective, unstructured time and suspended denouement. In 2020, she will publish Guitar! (Book Works, London) a work of prose fiction, in which how we learn or unlearn to speak, and why speak at all, are evinced by the possibilities of the word, ‘guitar’.
