Night School #3: Chris Heppell
30th October 2013
Taking Timothy Morton's concept of "the mesh" as a starting point, Chris Heppell (University of Aberdeen) will give a short presentation leading to a wider discussion about the relations between ecology, aesthetic theory, and visual culture. Beginning with a feeling of vertigo brought on by an awareness of ecological proximity with others, this event will consider the potential in thinking with materials and the displacements of propriety that can take place in our encounters with ambient artworks.
Rather than valorising an object-oriented thinking which suffuses parts of the contemporary art world, Chris will outline the potential of a dark ecology which retains the critical purchase of deconstruction and does not elide the ideological investments or power imbalances at work in ecological discourses.
