Committee Member Open Call 2019
Market Gallery is looking for two committee members to join in June/July 2019. The committee term is a two-year position that offers an opportunity to develop research interests and programme collaboratively in a non-hierarchical environment.
About the role:
Committee members are responsible for all aspects of the daily running of the organisation, and as such have the chance to gain experience in a number of fields. Essential tasks that are shared between committee members include, but are not limited to, administration, programming and research, artist liaison and communication with and partner organisations, writing and reporting on funding applications, bookkeeping, marketing, gallery maintenance and event delivery. We meet weekly and we are looking for people who can work within a small team and contribute to a stimulating and discursive environment.
Committee members are expected to have a clear interest in contemporary art and be able to dedicate roughly 2 days a week, understood to include the weekly meeting as well as a day of independent or sub-committee work. This commitment will fluctuate according to our programme calendar. Committee members also occasionally undertake invigilation duties, which are paid at the living wage.
Sustainability of artist-run spaces:
The gallery is currently at a critical point in its organisational development. For the next 12 months we will be participating in a Pilot scheme led by Creative Scotland, as part of which we plan to review of our governance and operational structures. The exact terms of our participation in the Pilot, including the possibility of a fee for committee members, are still being negotiated. We regret to say that we are unable to provide any guarantees on this before late-May 2019. However, we will aim to give applicants as much information as we possibly can in the interviews.
For the past few years the committee has undertaken far-reaching research and participated in discussions around sustainability of artist-run models, including conversations around labour, exclusion and privilege. The priority for the current committee is developing strategies towards a more inclusive and supportive future for the organisation. We welcome applications from those who are keen to be involved in this process.
